Guidelines/Instructions:
This modifier may be submitted when the operating surgeon performs the anesthesia service.
- CPT codes 99143-99145 describe moderate sedation performed by the same physician performing the diagnostic or therapeutic service that the sedation supports, requiring the presence of an independent trained observer to assist in the monitoring of the patient’s level of consciousness and physiological status
- The physician can submit codes for conscious sedation for procedures that are NOT included in Appendix G of CPT 2009 (this appendix appears on p. 566-7 of the CPT 2010 Professional Edition). Conscious sedation is considered an inherent part of the procedures listed in this appendix.
- CPT codes 99148-99150 describe moderate sedation provided by a physician other than the health care professional performing the diagnostic or therapeutic service that the sedation supports
