Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) Competitive Bidding Program Ask-the-Contractor Teleconference (ACT) – May 27, 2008
Effective July 1, 2008, Medicare will begin implementation of a new program for purchasing for Medicare patients.
Currently, Medicare payment for most DMEPOS is based on fee schedules. Recent amendments to the Social Security Act (the Act), however, will alter the process for determining payment amounts for certain DMEPOS items. The law also provides for phasing in competitive bidding beginning in 10 of the largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs).
The program will be expanded into 70 additional MSAs in 2009 and into additional areas after 2009. For Medicare beneficiaries whose permanent residence is in 1 out of 10 MSAs affected by the first phase of this program, only contract suppliers, in most instances, will be eligible to provide competitive bid items and receive payment from Medicare.
To find out how this will affect you and your Medicare patients please join Palmetto GBA's Regional Home Health and Hospice Intermediary (RHHI) staff on Tuesday, May 27, 2008.
