South Carolina Part B Carrier
Female Stress Urinary Incontinence Treatment

Effective November 1, 2009, Palmetto GBA will reimburse CPT Category III code 0193T: transurethral, radiofrequency micro-remodeling of the female bladder neck and proximal urethra for stress incontinency. The procedure to treat female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) due to hypermobility is appropriate for women who meet the following circumstances:

  • Have failed conservative treatment
  • Are not considered surgical candidates
  • Elected not to have a surgical intervention

According to CPT, the insertion of a non-indwelling catheter (CPT code 51701) is included in the micro-remodeling service. Therefore, do not submit services for CPT code 51701 in conjunction with 0193T. CPT code 0193T services will be limited to one service per lifetime.

Palmetto GBA will reimburse FDA approved devices/systems that meet the CPT 0193T description, such as Novasys Medical Inc’s Renessa. Since CMS mandates that physicians and nonphysician practitioners who bill Medicare are responsible for the correct coding of services, please review applicable service codes and descriptions in the current CPT and HCPCS manuals prior to the submission of a new FDA approved device/system. If you question the recommended service or procedure, send your inquiry and the device description to Dr. Elaine Jeter at the address listed below:
