Stereotactic Image-guided Radiosurgery Specialist Responsibilities

Hypofractionated image-guided robotic radiosurgery delivered by systems such as CyberKnife provide a targeted, accurate and painless alternative to open surgery. Since this treatment involves a multidisciplinary team of specialists, please review the following guidelines to reduce claims submission confusion:

Surgeons are responsible and may submit claims for:

  • Appropriate initial E/M service
  • Fiduciary placement and subsequent placement problems
  • Additional surgical specific problems
  • Follow-up surgical care for E/M services that fall outside of the global days for the surgical procedure

Radiation Oncologists are responsible and may submit claims for:

  • Stereotactic radiation treatment delivery, CPT code 77372
  • Radiation treatment management, CPT code 77432
  • CPT code 77432 includes the following services:
    • Fiducial scan review
    • Tumor contouring
    • Predose review with physicist
    • Attendance during treatment

NOTE: At this time, medical literature indicates Cyberknife treatment for prostate cancer is investigational and therefore not a covered Medicare benefit.
