Nerve Conduction Testing Coding and Billing Guidelines

Palmetto GBA may reimburse nerve conduction services performed with a discriminatory device that meets the following criteria:
  • Used in conjunction with a physical examination
  • Used to identify the initial presence of peripheral neuropathy
  • Uses a fixed anatomical template and produces computer generated reports  
To submit claims for discriminatory device services use the following guidelines:
  • Submit CPT code 95999: not otherwise classified (NOC)
  • Enter device name, such as 'NC-Stat®', in Item 19 of the CMS-1500 claim form
    Or
  • Enter device name, such as 'NC-Stat®', in the comment field of an electronic claim 
If you purchase a new device and question the recommended service procedure, you may send your inquiry and the device description to the Medical Affairs Department for a recommendation at B.Policy@PalmettoGBA.com

Note: Sensory perception or other testing by simple hand-held devices (Neurometer® and current perception testing) as Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) (CPT codes 95900, 95903 or 95904) is not considered reasonable and necessary and therefore is not a covered benefit. (Reference: NCD for Sensory Nerve Conduction Threshold Tests (sNCTs) 160.23)
