Drugs & Biologicals: Medicare Guidance

In general, drugs and biologicals are covered under Part B only if all of the following requirements are met:
 
They must meet the definition of drugs/biologicals:
Drugs and biologicals must be included or approved for inclusion in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia-National Formulary (USP-NF), the U.S. Pharmacopoeia Drug Information (USP DI), or the American Dental Association (ADA) Guide to Dental Therapeutics, except for those drugs and biologicals unfavorably evaluated in the ADA Guide to Dental Therapeutics.
 
They are not excluded as immunizations:
In general, vaccinations or inoculations are excluded from coverage unless they are directly related to the treatment of an injury or direct exposure to a disease or condition (for example, anti-rabies treatment after a wild animal bite). However, Medicare has authorized specific prophylactic immunizations: Pneumococcal and Hepatitis B vaccines for high or intermediate risk individuals, and influenza virus vaccine per flu season for all Medicare beneficiaries.
