As electronic providers are submitting NPI's with legacy provider numbers, a high volume of claims have been received with the NPI/Legacy combinations not valid according to the NPI crosswalk. Group providers should utilize the GROUP NPI in the 2010AA or 2010AB loop. The MEMBER OF GROUP NPI should only be submitted in the 2310B or 2420A loops. Below is a guide to use when submitting primary NPI's:
| Name/Loop | Legacy Information | NPI Information |
| Billing Provider 2010AA Loop | Group Number Solo Practice Number | Group NPI Solo NPI |
| Pay to Provider 2010AB Loop (this should only be submitted if different from Billing Provider) | Group Number Solo Practice Number | Group NPI Solo NPI |
| Rendering Provider 2310B Loop (this should only be submitted if a group practice) | Member of Group Provider Number | Member of Group NPI |
| Rendering Provider 2420A Loop (this should only be submitted if a group practice and used if different than the rendering provider in 2310B) | Member of Group Provider Number | Member of Group NPI |
Failure to properly submit the NPI in the correct loops may cause the claim or batch of claims to reject. Palmetto GBA has developed front-end edits that return as Informational when the NPI and Legacy combination submitted does not match the NPI crosswalk. Providers are encouraged to verify the NPI/Legacy combination is valid on the
NPPES Web site prior to submission. Below is a listing of the front-end edits Palmetto GBA has developed:
| Edit Number | Loop | Edit Description |
| Y1G | 2010AA | The NPI/Legacy combination does not match the NPI crosswalk. |
