How to use your NPI when Billing Medicare


As electronic providers are submitting NPI's with legacy provider numbers, a high volume of claims have been received with the NPI/Legacy combinations not valid according to the NPI crosswalk. Group providers should utilize the GROUP NPI in the 2010AA or 2010AB loop. The MEMBER OF GROUP NPI should only be submitted in the 2310B or 2420A loops. Below is a guide to use when submitting primary NPI's:

Failure to properly submit the NPI in the correct loops may cause the claim or batch of claims to reject. Palmetto GBA has developed front-end edits that return as Informational when the NPI and Legacy combination submitted does not match the NPI crosswalk. Providers are encouraged to verify the NPI/Legacy combination is valid on the NPPES Web site prior to submission. Below is a listing of the front-end edits Palmetto GBA has developed:
