Wireless Capsule Endoscopy
CPT code 91111 describes capsule endoscopy limited to the esophagus. Medicare generally does not cover screening, therefore CPT code 91111 when used to screen patients for esophageal varices or Barrett's metaplasia is not covered.
Currently there are no published reports that establish the medical necessity of capsule endoscopy limited to the esophagus as a diagnostic procedure and therefore Palmetto GBA will not cover it.
