Railroad Medicare issues a Provider Transaction Access Number (PTAN) once we have verified your enrollment information and have entered the data into our claims processing system. You must have a unique Railroad Medicare PTAN (it is different than your PTAN(s) issued by your local MAC) to bill for services rendered to Railroad Medicare beneficiaries.
Once Railroad Medicare receives your request for a PTAN, processing can take up to 30 calendar days for completion. When your request is completed, you will receive a letter with your Railroad Medicare PTAN information.
If you bill your Medicare claims electronically, request a PTAN using our PTAN Lookup and Request Tool.
If you bill using the CMS-1500 form, our article, CMS Claim Filing Instructions provides helpful information on how to submit a paper claim to us.
