What Services Are Covered by My Railroad Medicare Part B Benefits?

Published 03/21/2024

Answer
Part B Medicare, which is often called “Medical Insurance,” generally covers medically necessary services and preventive services provided by doctors, physicians, surgeons and nonphysician practitioners (such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, qualified clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, certified midwifes and certified registered nurse anesthetists). Other providers and suppliers that bill the Part B program include chiropractors, podiatrists, ambulance services, ambulatory surgical centers, diagnostic testing facilities, and laboratories. Claims for these types of services are processed by Railroad Medicare/Palmetto GBA in Augusta, Ga.

Part B also covers durable medical equipment (DME) including walkers, wheelchairs, hospital beds, oxygen and other supplies. Claims for most DME items are processed by regional DME Medicare Administrative Contractors.

You can find more information about Medicare covered services in the “Medicare and You” handbook. You can download and view the most recent version of the handbook on the Medicare.gov website
